এক মজারু বাবার চিঠি

Groucho Marx একগুচ্ছ চিঠিপত্র লিখেছেন কন্যাসন্তান মিরিয়ম-কে। মিরিয়ম সেইসব চিঠি নিয়ে এক সংকলন বের করেছিলেন। কিছুদিন আগেই তা হাতে এল। গ্রাউচো আবিষ্কারের পর থেকেই আমি প্রায় সর্বভূক। যা পাই পড়েই ফেলি।

মিরিয়ম, তাঁর ভুমিকায় লিখেছেন, “He was so interesting and humorous that he made the boys and men I dated seem dull in comparison.”
অবশ্যই নানা রসে ভরপুর এই চিঠির ভাণ্ডার। এর কয়েকটি নমুনা তুলে দিলাম। রসিয়ে রসিয়ে পড়ছি। আরও পড়ার পর আবার হয়ত লিখব।
বাড়িতে বাচ্চারা নেই, এমত অবস্থায় শান্ত বাড়ি। গ্রাউচো তার চিঠিতে মেয়েকে লিখছেন, “It’s awfully quitter here: the cat looks depressed and insulted; Shep (the dog) peers around moodily and barks at the moon; there’s no debris lying on the floor; the stars don’t shake and the whole household moves along without a sound.”
মেয়ের বয়েস কম। সে তাঁর বাবার মত বড় চিঠি লিখতে পারে না। সেই নিয়ে বাবার নানা অনুযোগের কথা মিরিয়ম তাঁর ভূমিকাতেই বলেছেন। গ্রাউচো এমনই একটি ছোট চিঠি পেয়ে মেয়েকে লিখছেন, “Received your note this morning, from the length of it I wouldn’t dignify it by calling it a letter;…”
আবার এটাও বলছেন, “all I can gather from it is the feeling that you never want to come home. It’s really not safe to allow a child from home alone, because they get to realize it too quickly that they don’t need their parents.”
এর পরের চিঠিতেই আবার অনুযোগ করেছেন গ্রাউচো। হয়ত মেয়ে চিঠি দেয় নি, কারন তখন সে প্রতিবেশীদের সাথে দূর গ্রামে বেড়াতে গিয়েছে। গ্রাউচো লিখছেন, তিনি জানেন মিরিয়মের হাতে একদম সময় নেই, কিন্তু তিনি তো প্রায় অখণ্ড অবসর যাপন করছেন। শুনুন গ্রাউচোর ভাষায়, “You’re little louse, an probably by the time I get back --- a big one. I appreciate your position. I know you must be very busy and that you have very little time for correspondence.”
তারপরেই, “Luckily, time hangs heavily on my hands, and I practically have the whole day to myself except for a few rehearsals and four or five performances.” প্রসঙ্গতঃ গ্রাউচো সিনেমা সংক্রান্ত কাজ ছাড়াও নানা জনপ্রিয় টক-শো করতেন।
মেয়ের পিয়ানো অনুশীলন নিয়ে সন্দিহান বাবা লিখছেন, “I hope you are practicing piano, although I doubt it. Without Uncle Tom there to lash you on, I imagine your practicing has become as frequent as the visits of eclipses.”
